Pentax K-5 preview
Pentax has announced the latest member of its DSLR line-up, the K-5. The new model is based on the Japanese manufacturer's current flagship DSLR, the K-7. Body design and control layout are identical but the K-5 comes with a new 16.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, faster continuous shooting and a very high maximum sensitivity of ISO 51200 (the highest in an APS-C camera so far).

Pentax K-5 unboxing ... on helium ;)
Received my brand new Pentax K-5 recently and here's a sped up unboxing that sounds like I inhaled a lot of helium - Mijonju style!! Such a nice solid little DSLR. Love everything about it. Key reasons why I got it: 1. In body Stabilization = small compact stabilized prime lenses. 2. Superb build quality in a compact body size. 3. Best ergonomics (subjective) 4. Fully weather sealed when paired with a WR or DA* lens 5. Amazing little compact prime lenses available only from Pentax. The DA and FA limited series. 6. Works like a charm with any K-mount glass since decades ago. Has Focus confirm and Catch in- focus to aid with manual lenses. 7. Amazing sensor with 14 stops DR and insane high ISO capability

Japan video diary
A mix of video and still images of my trip to Japan. First 1 minute of the video is scenes of a ride in a Nozomi Shinkansen bullet train (top speed of 300kmh (186 mph.) At 00:52 it is when two opposite direction trains pass each other showing a sense of the speed. First 3 still images from 1:00 are the fashionable Ginza district in Tokyo where due to the earthquake and power saving efforts exterior of the buildings are not illuminated these days. They are the landmark Sony, Sanai, and Mitsukoshi buildings dark at night. The rest of images are scenes from Tokyo, Nara, Kyoto, Osaka and Mount Koya. Once used by the JR in their Japan travel campaign, the music is sung by Yamaguchi Momoe about travelling in Japan (Ii Hi Tabidachi). Video and still images shot by a Pentax K7 body with four Pentax DA Limited 15mm, 21mm, 40mm and 70mm lenses.

AMAZON UK www.amazon.co.uk Customer Reviews: "I have a collection of Pentax DSLRs, the K10,20 and K7. I love them all in different ways and all of them are capable of making great pictures. Noise was always an issue with the K10 above ISO 800 and the K20 beyond ISO 1600. The K7 was interesting because it had a noticeable 'film like' grain beyond ISO 800 but it actually looked quite nice in certain images. Out of the three cameras the K7 was the camera of choice but most of the time I could use each camera interchangeably without concern. This is not the case with the K5 and I always pick this camera up first. The camera seems to be in a different league to the others, including the K7. It seems to focus better, the noise is exceptionally well controlled so that it hardly matters what ISO rating I am using and ISO 3200 is perfectly acceptable in a lot, if not most cases.But having said all of that the thing that has surprised me most of all is that the images from the K5 appear sharper! Now I know that people will tell me that this is a silly statement because the K5 has over 16 megapixels whereas the K7 and K20D have over 14 megapixels. Well this is true but I never noticed too much of a difference in the sharpness of the images from the K10, K20 and K7, even though the K10 had 'only' 10 megapixels. Now with the K5 the images just seem, well, better. Sharper, clearer etc. It could be that the new sensor delivers a better resolution, or that the camera now focuses better <b>...</b>

Kiwifotos Lens Mount Adapter: Pentax K Mount Lenses to Canon EOS
The adapter fits reasonably well on EOS bodies, but the spring that holds the lens in place is too short. Once in, the lens does not stay firm, but wobbles and this makes focusing and holding the camera a tricky operation.

THIS IS *NOT* AN ENDORSEMENT BY THE US ARMY I'm demonstrating the weather sealing and dust resistance offered by PENTAX's bodies and lenses (www.pentaximaging.com and www.pentaxforums.com) top offerings while deployed in Afghanistan by covering them in sand, small rocks, and dust, and then rinsing them off in the shower. PENTAX K-7 + DA* 50-135 f/2.8 PENTAX K-5 + D-BG4 Battery Grip + DA* 16-50 f/2.8 Video recorded with the PENTAX WG-2 @ 640x30p. For those that are curious regarding pricing, as of 8 July 2012, the PENTAX K-7 can be had for $450 used (as it is discontinued), the PENTAX K-5 for $800, the DA* 16-50 for $799, the DA* 50-135 for $850, and the Battery grip for $185. No Nikon or Canon offerings are as affordable for a fully weather sealed system with professional grade quality. Also, the PENTAX kit will be much smaller and more compact. Pentax came to the rescue and offers a weather sealed body. So I can take photos where there's lots of dust and even in the rain! what other slr camera can you do that with? The Pentax K7 is the only camera within hundreds of dollars that can meet this criteria.Of course having great image quality and autofocus abilities were critical too. Yeah, the Nikon D90 might have great low iso performance, but it's a toy compared to the Pentax K7.
