With the release of the Olympus E-P1 (and E-P2), Panasonic G-F1, how does Ricoh's unique interchangeable unit camera system fare against these popular interchangeable lens, compact-body, big-sensor cameras? Our DigitalRev TV presenter Kai takes a look at the pros and cons of the Ricoh GXR w/ A12 50mm f2.5 Macro combo.
Want to use your Ricoh GXR camera with some classic Leica lenses? or maybe some incredible voigtlander, Bessa or Carl Zeiss glass you've got laying around? Richoh think you might want to do that too... so they built this thing! Totally. Freaking. SWEET! The Ricoh GXR A12 Leica M-mount Also featured are a bunch of other prototypes and "maybe" units to show off the real cleverness of what I once thought was a camera system that was all kinds of HUH-WHAT-WHY? ... I was stupid and wrong, this is a very clever design. You can check out more about the, frankly, kinda weird RICOH GXR here; www.ricoh.com The Ricoh GXR is a compact digital camera but unlike conventional cameras which either have a fixed lens and sensor or interchangeable lens and a fixed sensor, the GXR takes interchangeable units, each housing a lens, sensor and image processing engine. This allows each unit to have these features optimised to one another and a specific task, where as with conventional interchangeable lens cameras each different lens must use the same sensor and engine. The sealed units also prevent dust from reaching the sensor which can be a problem with other cameras where the sensor is exposed whilst a lens is being changed. A significant disadvantage of this system is the extra cost involved in having to buy a whole new sensor with every new lens. The body holds a built in pop-up flash as well as a hot shoe on top for an external flash unit. Alternatively Ricoh's 'VF-2', an external ...
I have tested filming movie using Ricoh GXR Mount A12 which you can mount Leica M mount lenses. Even though it was enjoyable to use high quality lense and finishing was also excellent, one thing very unfortunate was the camera's incapability to film good quality movies. In details, exposure or colour adjustment is not available. Since this is the camera with high potential, I expect movie quality can be improved in future.

Add to this the macro function and you have a very capable and high quality camera.I was going to get the Leica X1 but given the price/picture quality ratio especially given higher ISO noise verses the Ricoh A12 lens kit. Also, the build quality is exceptional which was another reason I wanted the Leica. Don't buy a name like so many end up doing. I'm glad I didn't.The one factor that keeps this from getting higher marks from various reviews is the slow AF like I said. So I would say for now it's not for action shots but is perfect for those like composing photos or portraiture type photos. There are two firmware updates that address some issues and have enhanced other functions and I'm very pleased with Ricoh's efforts. They still need to get their computer interface up to date for the software that comes with this kit. I use Snow Leapord so the 64 bit is currently being developed and should be out soon. The firmware is easy to upload and the PDF files from ...

My other cameras are film or digital SLRs with prime lenses. I have Nikons for speedy autofocus and a Pentax for the jewel-like look the FA 43mm/1.9 and FA 77mm/1.8 give. Even the Nikkor 28mm/2.8 D, 2nd cheapest lens in Nikon's line, gives images of remarkable clarity compared with the Ricoh P10 module. So why did I get it? I wanted to shoot video and as someone who's never owned a digicam it's something I can now do at 720p. True the files are large but I can import them into video editing software and compress it down to H.264. It's also tiny and I can almost forget I'm carrying it; something impossible with an SLR or larger camera. Also there's a Leica M mount module coming up and that opens up a world of vintage Leica and modern Zeiss M and Voigtlander lenses to use. I don't know if the M mount module will be able to do video but I'm covered with the P10.All in all I'm satisfied with the kit and saving my money for M lenses." There are very sophisticated reviews of this camera on professional camera review websites, but here is a review from a basic user.Ricoh cameras are hard to find, as most retailers offer Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc. I became a Ricoh fan in the late 1980s, using a very inexpensive point/shoot camera. The picture quality was great, and I used that camera for years. When digital photography became more mainstream, I bought a Ricoh RDC-5000. It was 1000 at the time, that was 1999. Believe it or not, I have used that Ricoh RDC-5000 for 11 years, until now (2010). About two years ago I bought a Nikon Sd7 to replace the old Ricoh, but the pictures were not as good, and perhaps out of habit I just kept using the Ricoh for my work (indoor) photos.I finally decided I had to upgrade to a new digital camera. I decided to try Canon, Nikon and Ricoh. Most of my photos are taken indoors, although recently I use my camera for natural city scenes. I don't want to use a huge camera because it can take something away from the mood of the shot if I appear too "professional".I went to an excellent camera store in Portland OR, where they cater to every camera equipment need. They stock Ricoh and all other brands. They allowed me to take photos ...
