Light Streaks in bright lights or reflections, at night, the streaks are blue, vertical and cover the entire screen. 2. Has crispy nightime performance, brighter, however, the brighter white areas loose detail (see billboards in distance). 3. Both Cameras set at their intelligent modes, auto everything. 4. Lost focus at times. 5. Original source resolution @1280x720 AVCHD format. 6. Panasonic's Power IS shows. If you pay close attention to the clips, you can see that the Panasonic TZ10 shows less movement during pans, and other minor camera adjustments (such as at end of clip, when there is that inevitable wobble) The TZ10 holds steady. Sony HX5v Issues: 1. Low light performance issues. Will set itself to a darker setting, causing overall scene to be darker. However, lowering the brightness allows for details in the lighter areas to be preserved. This may be corrected, in post production, using a mid to upper end video editor. However, this means that "out of the box video" from the camera requires much more processing before you can work with it (ie, playback on your TV at end of day). 2. Autofocus is definitely slower, and gets lost easier after it achieves focus (at night). 3. Image stabilization is not as powerfull and ...

Sony digital cameras with "Exmor R" CMOS sensor take excellent still photos in low light, however the video performance under low light conditions is worse than that of competing cameras with CCD sensors. This video is a direct comparison between Sony DSC-HX5V and Canon PowerShot SX-210 cameras. For this video the Sony camera was set to record in MP4 mode at 720p resolution to match Canon. Both files were converted to Apple ProRes 422 format to edit in Final Cut Pro. The output file that was uploaded to YouTube was encoded in MP4 format with 10000 kbps bit rate. Sony DSC-TX7 camera has the same poor low-light performance as HX5V. I would not recommend either of these two cameras to anyone concerned with the video quality in low light.

Editorial Corrections: 1. In beginning of video under production notes there is a typo. At bottom it says Project rendered "1280x7200" 10Mbps. The resolution should read "1280x720", not "7200." Production Notes: Panasonic TZ10 (1280x720 Quicktime MOV Format): 1. Daytime white light streaking in sunlight. 2. Sharper video, higher contrast between objects. 3. Zooming restricted to 10x vs 16x to be fair to Sony HX5v's 10x limit. Can zoom in much more. 4. Audio is more robust than Sony. 5. Video still frame has nice clarity and resolution. Sony HX5v (1280x720 H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Format): 1. Sony has 10x limit on focus vs. Pana 12/16x. 2. More shades of color, but not as vivid. 3. Image Stabilizer not as good as Panasonic. 4. No light streaking. * Project rendered at 1280x7200 @ 10Mbps. Get your Sony DSC-HX5V here: www.amazon.com Here is a look at one of the best point and shoot compact cameras to date: the Sony DSC-HX5V(10.2MP CMOS sensor). It debuted back in March of 2010 but hasn't lost a step. If you are looking for a camera that can do it all, then this may be the perfect camera for you. Being priced under $250 doesn't hurt either. Despite the fact that the HX9V is launching in an effort to replace this great camera, I think the HX5V presents a great opportunity to those who don't feel compelled to spend the premium that the HX9V demands but still desire a full featured pocket friendly dynamo. Enjoy! -TDD

Production Notes: Panasonic TZ10 (1280x720 Quicktime MOV Format); and Sony HX5v (1280x720 H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Format): 1. Daytime performance is similar, but slightly different. 2. Pay attention to color/contrast handling of each camera. 3. Also look at each camera's image stabilization steadiness. 4. Both have about the same trouble with wind noise. 5. When both clips are processed individually, you'll be able to listen to thier audio tracks separately. 6. Each audio track is actually playing at the same time, so their may be some echoing throughout. * This video was rendered at 1280x720 @ 10Mbps.
