While Kodak's Zi8 may not be perfect, it has a lot of the little extras we've been asking for--including electronic image stabilization and external mic support--and delivers very respectable video for a mini camcorder well under $200. For starters, Kodak improved upon the design of last year's Zi6 and this year's ruggedized Zx1, both of which we thought decent, but not great. The Zi8 looks slicker than the Zi6, and while it's far from the smallest or lightest pocket camcorder we've tested, it is fairly compact, measuring 2.4 inches by 4.5 inches by 0.9 inch and weighing 4.8 ounces. This model comes in three colors Kodak dubs black, aqua, and raspberry, and it has a sharp and generously sized 2.5-inch LCD on the back. The only noteworthy drawback is that all three models are fingerprint magnets and you'll find yourself constantly wiping down the camcorder. The plastic finish is also susceptible to scratches, so you'll probably want to keep the unit in a protective cover, particularly if you've got keys in your pocket. Unfortunately, Kodak doesn't ship the Zi8 with any sort of case, though it does sell one, as well as a remote control. To trim down the chassis, Kodak has gone with a slimmer lithium ion rechargeable battery instead of the AA NiMH rechargeables that ship with the Zi6. That's a good move, but you don't have the luxury of swapping in a standard pair of alkaline batteries should you run out of juice on the road. My rating is 9/10 Aqua Forest $7.99 itunes.apple.com Aqua Forest 2 $4.99 itunes.apple.com Both Aqua Forest games use the amazing OctaveEngine Casual developed by a company called Prometech, Aqua Forest simulates how water, gases and solids behave together. There is a Free mode where there is a painting tool allowing you to create your own animated picture with loads of tools at your disposal. You can draw "water" that realistically sloshes around the screen, you can put fire in your wire and watch the water evaporate. You can also create a house and burn it down. It's my favorite part of the game and I could spend a lot of time just in the Free mode by itself. Worth the price of admission alone. The puzzle part has 5 different sections including a tutorial and 10 different games per section, Tilting, Touch, Drawing, Warm And Cool, and All Functions. You can also download user created puzzles which is very cool. The puzzles start off easy and then progressively get harder. Some require you turn your idevice so water reaches the goal, cutting string, adding fire to a puzzle, unplugging something to let the water out etc. Aqua Forest 2 sadly does NOT match up to the original. It doesn't even include a free mode but it also doesn't have the same graphics. Gone are the fun graphics of the original to be replaced by static realistic backgrounds and a very realistic water drop. Overall, I feel that zi8 is a significant improvement over the previous model. The video quality is definitely better than zi6 in all conditions, whether outside in bright sunlight or indoors in low light.
