Canon HF200 vs Panasonic HDC-SD20 in-car stability comparison
I needed an HD camcorder to capture in-car footage. Initially I was going to go with the Canon HF200 as I already have a Canon HV30. Searching through Youtube I found several people complain about the Canon's video quality suffering from image shake while mounted in a moving car. I also suspected people's choice and quality of camera mount may have something to do with the poor image. Someone suggested the Panasonic HDC-SD20 would do much better in a car environment. I decided to put both cams to the test and see how much of a difference there really was when installed on what I know to be a solid mounting system. I mounted both cams side by side on RAM suction mounts using the sunroof glass as the mounting point. Same mount, same location, same car, same road, exact same moment video is captured. Watch the video and the difference is immediately noticeable. The Panasonic appears virtually stable while the Canon looks like its mounted on a bowl of jello. Its a shame because in all other aspects, the Canon is a better cam and produces a better, sharper picture. In the Panasonic's defence, it is priced several hundred dollars less.

A quick test of the Panasonic HDC-SD20 'full HD' consumer camcorder; I'd wandered into Maidstone to see what I could shoot and, rather conveniently, The Dualers were busking at the top of the High Street. Recorded using the camera on auto settings, with OIS on, at 'best' quality. Rendered to 1024x576 (square-pixel SD widescreen) at 5Mbps H.264 for upload.

A quick test of the HDC SD20 zoom, going beyond the standard 16x optical into the the 40x digital which seems pretty good (would have been even better if it had not been murky & so windy in Wales :) Note:- Camera was set to HG quality mode which is not it's highest setting.

Panasonic HDC-SD20 Digital Cinema + Digital Cinema Colour Mode Test Video 20.09.2010 16:45
So hier ist mal ein Test Video vom Digital Cinema Mode mit Digital Cinema Colour. Gefilmt habe ich das Test Video um ca 16:45 am 20.09.2010 somit also auch mit der Spätsonne sprich leichter LowLight test wenn man so will. ^^ der Digital Cinema Modus nimmt dann in 1080p auf statt wie viele Cams nur in 1080i und die Digital Cinema Colour Funktion behebt das Farbproblem bei CMOS (1 Chip Cams) und Aufnahmen mit wenig Licht. Dadurch sind dann die Farben fast wie bei 3CCD Cams sprich satter und detaillierter ;) Die Videodatei die ich hier hochgeladen habe ist unbearbeitet also so wie sie auf dem Speicher des Camcorders lag. Schade nur, das youtube kein Dolby unterstützt den sonst würde man auch den 5.1 Sound hören können ;-) ___________________________________________________________ So here is sometimes a test video from the Digital Cinema Mode Digital Cinema Colour. I shot the test video at approximately 16:45 on 20/09/2010 thus being included with the late sun ie test LowLight easier if you will. ^ ^ the Digital Cinema mode will be in 1080p instead of how many cams only in 1080i and the Digital Cinema Colour function corrects the color problem in CMOS (1 chip cams) and shooting with little light. This then the colors are almost like 3CCD cams say rich and detailed ;) The video file I've uploaded here is raw so as she lay on the memory of the camcorder. Too bad that youtube does not support the Dolby otherwise you would be able to listen to the 5.1 sound ;-)
