I took pictures of fireworks on July 4, 2011, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. I wanted to try something different, so I purposely shot the fireworks out of focus, and with my Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 soft-focus lens on a Canon EOS 5D Mark II body.
This video is a quick summary introduction to what a "walk-around" lens is, what you should look for in a good general purpose lens, as well as a side to side comparison of 3 top walk around lens candidates, namely the Canon 18-200, Sigma 18-200, and Tamron 18-270. Each of these lenses were specifically built for APS-C cameras (these are cameras with smaller sensors and are not full frame). Everyone has an opinion on walk around lenses, and this is just mine. I did several tests with each lens and found that each has a place depending on what type of customer you are. You will be able to read this and many more reviews at: www.michaelthemaven.com

www.learningdslrvideo.com Now that I ordered my Canon 5D Mark III I can start buying some really good glass. Since I am mostly a run and gun shooter, I don't have the luxury of time to swap out prime lenses out on the fly all day long, so that is why the first lens I want to buy is a 24-70mm f2.8. Now I have used the Canon 24-70mm many times in the past and I really like it, but I got really excited when Lee Morris from Fstoppers.com turned me the new Tamron 24-70 VC lens that has VC or vibration control and is cheaper. The Canon 24-70 is $1600 and the Tamron is $1300. Lee had mixed results on which one is sharper so I thought I would give you guys another test. I'm a bit biased already on this review because I really want to Tamron to win but that's is why my good friend James Drake from 5KInsight is here to keep things in perspective. James is real smart guy, and has a lot of experience using really expensive glass, you should listen to him if he if we disagree. The reason why I want it to win is the Tamron has image stabilization which is awesome for video. For it to win, it needs to be just as sharp as the Canon and have a good working vibration control. I think a lot of people that shoot video are frustrated that Canon didn't give us a 24-70 with IS. I think Cannon lost an opportunity here and has left the door open for Tamron on this one. Important to note this is not the II version of the Canon lens that runs for $2300. So what I'm really hoping for in this test is ...

This lens is certainly unique in this respect. But the truth of the matter is that most people find this to be a feature that they will probably find little (if any) use for. So most people pass on this lens in favor of some sort of zoom (ie the EF 75-300mm). But even if you have no use whatsoever for the soft focus feature, this lens is actually one great, large-aperture, telephoto prime. Oh, and it can be had for a song. I have seen this lens go for less that 200 used here at the marketplace, as well as on ebay and craigslist. Even new, it is pretty cheap.Optically, this lens is a GREAT performer. Sharpness is GREAT, even at f/2.8. It is certainly a MUCH better performer here than ANY Canon telephoto zoom that does not have an L somewhere in it's name. And since it is SO much faster than any consumer-grade zoom, it is MUCH better in both low light AND in situations where you are looking for background blur. And, as is the case most of the time, both saturation and contrast are worlds better than your typical consumer-grade zoom. How does it compare with an L-series zoom? I can't say for sure. But it does cost MANY times less. And it is faster than the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4. So given both the price and performance, this is one GREAT lens." "I ...

Surprisingly this is a decent lens.- It's body is plastic with a metal mount and it is Made in Japan.- It covers the 27-200mm range for Sony's APS-C 1.5x crop factor on the SLT-A37/57/65/77.- The zoom ring is smooth and barrel did not slide open when pointed down.- The focus ring is free turning since it is made for direct manual focus, but there is no distance scale.- Autofocus is fast and quiet, close to the 16-50mm f/2.8.Compared to the Sony 16-105mm:Tt appeared that the 18-135mm had more distortion on the wide end, but perhaps that had to do with in-body correction. The resolution compared well at the other focal lengths. I didn't pixel peep, but jpegs looked sharp on both lenses.I didn't see any noticeable fringing. The 18-135 seems a bit larger in diameter, but lighter and keeps the 62mm filter size.If you don't have the 16-105, then this is a lower price alternative although you trade the 24mm equivalent perspective for 27mm.After seeing this lens, the 16-105mm isn't good enough to justify the price any more.Compared to the Sony 18-250, this lens beats that one optically, AF, and in build quality. There is no question. In video mode on the A57, this lens beats both 16-105 and 18-250 with faster quieter AF and smooth zoom. The lens design is very improved and provides an excellent general ...
