I got my 500D yesterday so went out to play today. I decided to play with pretty much my longest option which is the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 with a 2 x Teleconverter. I was thinking about adding a 1.4x TC as well for a bit of fun but didn't get around to this. I was using a Velbon DV-7000 fluid head tripod which worked well with my Canon SX1 but there is just too much wobble when using this heavy setup. I was using exposure lock to try to assist in getting the aperture as wide as possible but it meant I didnt quite get it right all of the time. You can hear the clicks of me making some adjustments as you go through, Ive not done any editing apart from use WinFF to get the file size down. Manual focus was used so Im pleased the screen worked well allowing me to get pretty close most of the time. For a first time out Im pretty happy, I knew there would still be limitations of a CMOS sensor with jelly wobble and Canon not allowing aperture control but I already had a big investment in Canon lenses that wouldnt allow me to justify a switch to another brand. Im planning to get a selection of ND filters to allow me to reduce the light getting in so the camera will select wider apertures more readily. Like many others Im hoping that there will be a hack that will give some control, even being able to lock ISO at 100 would make a huge difference, but lets see how it goes.

Two FLD glass elements, which have the performance equal to fluorite glass have also been added along with three SLD glass elements, all which provide excellent correction of color aberration. In spite of the additions of all of these features, Sigma has managed to make the lens more compact than its predecessor, measuring only 7.8" in length. For any serious photographer where the 70-200mm focal range is often the most important second lens to own after the initial standards lens or mid range zooms. The fast aperture is extremely useful and important in low light environments or when shooting fast moving situations where a higher shutter speed demands maximum lights thru the lens. HSM ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focus capability. Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. It has a minimum focusing distance of 55.1 inches throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:8 ...

This is a mega zoom that is a fixed 2.8 lens. What that means is if you are at 120mm it is a 2.8 and at 300mm it still is a 2.8. This is a very unique lens that no one other than Sigma make. This is the first version to have OS built in and from my sample images it really does a great job stabilizing you images. This is a video of the NIKON lens I am selling on ebay. As you can see everything is perfect but that stiffness when it reaches 250mm-300mm. I bought it with a Mack Warranty but never used it. I don't use this lens much so I haven't attempted to fix it yet. If you think you could do it good or if you could use it like that great. I don't know if mack fixes it but you could try.

If you were to think of the new Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG as a super-sized version of our 70-200mm F2.8 lens, that makes a lot of sense. And if you were to think of it as a zoomable and optically stabilized variation on the popular 300mm F2.8 prime telephoto lens, that also makes a lot of sense. Key items in the feature set include optical stabilization, fast constant 2.8 aperture and a hypersonic motor for fast autofocus- all for a price that's flat our amazing. For sports, wildlife and news photographers, this lens has a lot to offer. Reference: vimeo.com The official Vimeo Pro Page of Sigma Corporation of America. www.sigmaphoto.com
