Sony 18-250mm, and 50mm F1.4 - AF speeds
Short video showing the AF speed of the Sony 18-250mm lens and 50mm F1.4. Both using the motor built into the camera. The 18-250 was slow for indoors and not bright enough so I just got the 50mm F1.4 and was amazed by how fast it was, I made this video! The 18-250 goes slower on the way back when zoomed above 70mm because not enough light for the AF system to work well. This demo is with an A200. I don't know how the video quality went so bad when put onto youtube.

Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 lens + Sony A77 Camera - Auto focus issues
The Sigma lens came with the "A77 Compatible" sticker, so it has the firmware update. As this video clearly shows, the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 lens and doesn't correctly auto-focus at 18mm for closer objects. ...more... Seems to work great at the mid-range focal lengths, but then does way too much hunting at 250mm for further objects. I'm whispering so you can hear the camera motor. You can clearly see at 18mm that going from distant to near, the lens doesn't re-focus. Sony A77 camera is set to fast focus with "Continuous" mode and spot focus.

The Sony version is based on the original Tamron, the Sony having better Bokeh (and some reviews also put the Sony a little faster in auto focus).As with all lenses of this optical range, there are problems at the very low and high end, but nothing that can't be sorted out in post processing if it is an issue.A bigger issue for some may be that the 18-250 is often too slow for low light (for that, read indoors under artificial lighting). Of course, a suitably faster lens with the same range would also be twice as heavy and 10 times as expensive... not really an option (or even an issue) unless you want to shoot rock concerts in darkened venues or high speed sporting events.Another minor (ie 'to be expected') issue is that the 18-250 has no macro mode. Again, you can't have a range of 18-250mm and expect macro as well!Overall, a recommended buy. Not perfect, but possibly the most versatile single lens solution out there, and certainly the backbone piece of any beginner/intermediates 2-3 lens set (especially, if, like most users, the majority of your photos are taken outside or in <b>...</b>
