• Afternoon at Scotshall Lane

A short film remembering a sunny Figaro afternoon in the country. This rapid-stop-motion animated performance was shot on a Canon IXUS 75 using its continuous-shot mode, mounted on a Konig heavy duty tripod. I can capture footage at about 1 frame/second with my ISO and exposure settings. This low frame rate of capture encourages me to think like an animator when filming; practising spacing & timing, planning eases or easing on the fly, trying to "act" out key poses, and over-acting some movements to have the motion read better. For the most part, the individual images are played back in an 8 frames/second sequence.

  • Fitting a Manfrotto HDV701 head to Konig KN100 tripod

The konig KN100 tripod, for the price, is a very robust tripod. The legs are copied from several of the Manfrotto range. This design adds torsional resistance to panning forces so is the most stable design. It is let down by the oversize ( for small camcorder/ dslr video cameras). I decided to modify the head to take the Manfrotto HDV701 fluid head ( although any head could have been fitted with a 3/8" standard thread fitting ) This video shows the step by step modification to convert the head to a 3/8 mounting stud. If you want to do this modification yourself i have a template for the drilling position for the holes, or if enough interest, I could fabricate the parts in kit form. The results are excellent, as you would expect from Manfrotto products. The whole assembly weighs just 4Kg and fits comfortably in the existing carry case.

  • PROFESSIONAL VIDEO TRIPOD WITH FLUID DRAG HEAD WF718

PROFESSIONAL VIDEO TRIPOD WITH FLUID DRAG HEAD WF718 First impressions: Right out of the Box Strong, stable and a high quality finish. Tripod: This is a four section tripod held in place by flip locks with strong rubber feet. I found the tripod to be very sturdy having all the qualities of a high end manufacture. It has good independent leg spread to a total of three positions as seen at the end of this video review. The center column extends fully with a groove cut down the center to avoid rotation. The legs are held in place with what appear to be stainless steel hex bolts Fluid Drag Head: The WF718 Fluid Drag Head is made from what appears to be aircraft grade aluminum, it has a very good black finish to match the tripod. At first operation of the pan motion I found it to be stiff but after a few turns it became very fluid and almost silk like It has a locking knob on one side and an tension knob on the other going from very stiff to very smooth. The tilt motion is also very smooth The cameras mounting plate has a locking function so you can easily remove and replace the camera. The main sliding mounting plate has a safety detent 'pin' that can be removed with the supplied tool. Witness makings help replacing the camera to it's original position, helps when using follow focus and matt boxes. As seen in CheesyCam's review of the 717AH Video Fluid Head, the mounting collar and pan tension knob also clear the mounting surface, making it ideal for slider and dolly projects ...

I'm 165cm tall and it reaches slightly above my belly and it is still fine holding the Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lens. You have to bend or stand on your knees to see from the viewfinder. More than 900 grams camera cannot be handled well especially for night photography. You may compensate this by fully retracting the feet to its basic length which gives much more strength. You can easily attach your camera to the head and it allows you to move the camera towards all direction as the professional tripod does. Portrait or vertical shoot cannot be very up right and firm for DSLR, but for pocket cameras I'm sure it will be better. If you do not use tripod frequently and avoid heavy stuffs then this beautiful Konig Traveller Tripod is the right choice." "This is the second one of these tripods I have had. I must admit I broke the first one by overtightening a screw, it was completely my fault not the tripod. I think these are excellent little things and ideal for what they are meant, that is a traveller tripod. They are small when folded down and they are lightweight which if you are going away by plane is exactly what you need. They are reasonably secure once set up and I have no qualms about putting my camera ...

The pan and tilt action is quite smooth. The legs are two section with quick release levers and will almost open out horizontally. There is a centre column with, usefully, a soft plastic cap which can assist with supporting the whole weight of the camera and will not scratch smooth surfaces. This is a sturdy little beast but with one caveat. There is no means to lock the legs to prevent them from splaying out, as they are designed with a wide range of movement to assist with height placement, and it is possible for them to splay if a heavy camera is mounted as the weight could overcome the friction which is all that prevents the legs from splaying. This is where the central column should be used to take the whole weight and for legs to act more as stabilisers. This is not a criticism of the tripod, which does what it was designed to do. Used sensibly within its design parameters it should be expected to deliver for many years to come." "It is ok for the price you are paying, not professional of course. The brand is Konig Photo, and after I bought it I found out ...
