TWITTER - twitter.com FLICKR - www.flickr.com I had to grab a new tripod head so I had a bit more control when doing a bit more serious filming. Hopefully this one will last me most of my life, as I hope the tripod it'self will to. Just in case your wondering, this piece of (beautifully crafted) metal cost £109 from jessops: www.jessops.com Quite pricey for a one off, but I hope to do a bit more video in the future, so I hope it wil pay for it'self in the long run! Thanks for watching. Andy B
First things first: I have nothing positive to say about the NEX-VG10 - the manual zoom ring is jerk-prone, tight to the touch, and virtually impossible to use in a smooth fashion. For all the effort that Sony put into incorporating a manual lens onto a consumer-grade camera, they did a lousy job of it. (Say what you want about avoiding zooms, but I firmly believe they have their rightful place - when executed correctly). What's more, the weight of the lens throws off the balance of the camera, the LCD monitor doesn't represent focus that well - making manual adjustment a hit-or-miss affair - and it has a CMOS sensor; as if the world hasn't had enough rolling shutter. Oh, it doesn't shoot 24p. Pffft. Hence, this video embodies my glowing praise for the Manfrotto 701HDV tripod head. It may not look like much (try to say that after considering its cost), but it's smooth as butter; especially with smaller camcorders. I only wish that I had put more effort into panning smoothly than wrestling with the Sony's lousy zoom ring. That said, the 701HDV head was paired with Manfrotto's 547B tripod - yet another disappointment. The 547B is needlessly fragile and fidgety, and carries a price tag ($240+/-) that doesn't reflect the ease at which the leg brackets can crack. By comparison, one can get a simple Ravelli/Dynatron AVTP-model tripod for $89 and be better off (though it's possible that a complete klutz will forget to tighten the AVTP's locks - sending any camera to the ground <b>...</b>

I always used a photo tripod for my video recordings, but after screwing up a unique recording due to the roughly moving head I decided to invest in a proper video tripod, so I bought myself a Manfrotto 547B tripod with 701HDV video head, in my opinion a good compromise between function and size/weight... This recording of SY 1013 with the morning passenger train from Baiyin to Shenbutong was the first in which I used the smooth video head to follow the train, something I normally never do... I must say I'm rather pleased with my new tripod... :-) (Baiyin, Gansu, China, 23/09/2011)

Here's a test shot with a wide long pan at 17mm and 50mm (both extremes) of the Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX DC OS HSM lens mounted on the 701HDV Manfrotto video head and 547B video tripod. Note I use the 'rubber band trick' to minimize hand vibrations. There are some vibration issues due to the overall slowness of the pan, normally one wouldn't pan as long or as slowly, preferring a faster or intentional pan between known start and stop points. I intentionally did an extra wide and slow pan to show the quality of the Manfrotto head in an extreme situation. Notice when I follow the passing vehicle with a faster pan, the video head keeps up smoothly.
I was very impressed with Manfrotto, but was worried it would be too much tripod for my small Panasonic HDC-HS900. It ended up being a great purchase and well worth the money. The 701HDV video head is amazingly smooth, even with the light camera. The 'stickiness' is fully adjustable and will make recording long scenes with multiple pans a lot easier not only for you, but for the viewer because of less bounce and pullback after a pan. I use this tripod in mud, sand, and other dirty areas, filming horses. It has stood up to everything I throw at it and done a great job. The quality of construction is excellent and I know this package will last a very long time!" "I'm a starting freelance videographer, so I wanted an affordable tripod. However, having worked with bad tripods in the past, I wanted to find a really nice fluid head for as cheap as I could. This tripod's not exactly cheap (though cheaper than a lot), but boy do I love it! The head is amazingly smooth, and the build feels light, but very sturdy. Great for carrying around! Lots of great features. I would recommend this for sure, if you're able to pay it!" "Perfect for the lighter shoulder style cameras. The legs lock nicely, the center stabilizer drops into place, head movement is smooth. It helps to have <b>...</b>
Here is a quick overview of the Manfrotto MKC3-H01 Video/Camera Tripod. It is designed to work well with video and still cameras. The fixed head is a ball type with smooth action to it. It included a unique tightening wheel that makes position changes fast. The tripod head doesn't appear to be removable and when fully extended, it feels a bit top-heavy. Overall, a decent tripod that can be picked up locally in the USA.
