Se how i shot macro pictures in a planted tank. A quick review of: Manfrotto 055XPROB Tripod Manfrotto 410 junior geared head Velbon Super Mag Slider Manfrotto 394 plate adapter Also using Canon EOS 60D with Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 MACRO (1:1) and Raynox DCR-250.
If you are serious with your macro photography then you might want to consider some form of tripod fixture which allows you to focus the camera by "racking" the focus which is the preferred method rather than using the lens to focus when using high magnification. This is a review of the Manfrotto implementation of such a device, the 454 micropositioning plate. To facilitate quick mounting onto the tripod and camera to plate I recommend you employ quick release plates. The design is adequate for the purpose however the lack of thought in the engineering of this product means there is considerable side to side and up and down movement in the slide assembly which means positioning at high magnification is difficult. At over £60 in the UK this product is IMHO overpriced compared to other manufacturers products which have more features as well.
Slik Monopod: tinyurl.com/7y2nda8 Tripod Head I use with the Slik: tinyurl.com/3syptra Velbon Monopod: tinyurl.com/7asaqye Acebil MP-60V: tinyurl.com/836zyhb Manfrotto 560B-1: tinyurl.com/6v43sf9 Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 (the best IMHO): tinyurl.com/79xzfkr UPDATE: I Stand corrected on the Manfrotto 560B. Brent Barrie raised the point that the 560B works great when using other tripod heads. So while its not ready out of the box you could add your own tripod head. So if you are strapped for cash, but you had another tripod head on a slider for example, you could use it on the 560B. Keep in mind by the time you add a decent tripod head you will be closer to the price of the 561. The 701 head on the 561 monopod is the dream team. The quick release tab is super fast when using a DSLR that alone is worth the extra money to me. So there you go. If you want a great monopod leg and your own tripod head grab the 560B. If you want a monopod and a killer tripod head and don't plan on removing it all the time check out the 561.
Canon 250D Close-up Lens Test Results While searching for a good close-up lens which wouldn't degrade the video quality (well almost, see comment later), I came across the Canon 250D. Unfortunately I couldn't find any good test shots or reviews on using the lens for videography. However, I did find a review on YouTube for macro photograpy. The review was good, so I went ahead and ordered the lens from Adorama. After a 2 month backorder wait the lens finally arrived. As it turns out, it was well worth the wait. With 2 elements, the lens has some weight to it. Here are some working numbers: Focus range, lens to subject - 200 to 250mm; horizontal width with tele converter off - 165-200mm (wide), 22mm (tele); horizontal width with tele converter on - 90-100mm (wide), 12mm (tele). The lens produced excellent video quality. The image did soften a wee bit with the the tele-converter on and zoomed all the way in. One of the great features is there is NO focus shift throughout the zooming range. Two other accessories are required to produce good results with this lens. The first is a sturdy tripod with a fluid head, if your subject will be moving, and second a focusing rail. With the lens zoomed all of the way out you may be able to hand hold the shot, but not when zoomed in. The magification and the extremely short depth of field necessitate the use of these accessories. Another recommendation is to turn off instant auto focus. I found with it on the image would suddenly shift to ...

Buy From AMAZON US go.qweas.com Customer Reviews: "The Hakuba Magnesium Macro Slider is exactly the same as the Velbon Super Mag Macro Tripod Slider for Precision Macro Photography. It is an excellent option for those who want to have good control of their macro shots without paying big bucks for a high-end macro rail. It is not very heavy, but it feels strong and solid. The forward and sideways adjustments work surprisingly well. So it is possible to work with the extremely small depth of field that is a part of macro photography. You can take several images of the subject, moving the rail knob a little between each shot and the next, and then use software for focus stacking, blending the sharpest parts of each shot into one composite image. This is particularly useful when using very high magnification lenses and makes it very easy to have perfect focus on small subjects. I wish I had known of this device years ago but at least I am enjoying the use of it now. It is also very well built and in my opinion is very good value for the price." Product Description Velbon Tripod The Velbon Super Mag Macro Focusing Rail Slider, essential for precision macro photography, is made of a lightweight, corrosion-resistant magnesium alloy. Even with a steady hand, macro photography can be tricky and temperamental. The fine tuning of the Super Mag Slider helps you find the right depth of field to take precise close-up photos. The smooth action macro-rails consist of X and Y movable tables for precisely adjusting focus. The X axis moves right and left, the Y axis moves towards and away from the operator on threaded rods. By using the included allen wrench you can separate the top and bottom tables for additional modification. Underneath the top table (Y), there are both 1/4 and 3/8-inch threaded holes for mounting the top table to a tripod. The adjustment knobs are smooth and fluid, and have just the right amount of resistance.
