• The Friendly Butterfly: Lorquin's Admiral, Bouquet Canyon, Casio EX-F1 Slow Motion + HD 720p

One day while hiking in Bouquet Canyon, CA, I ran across an exceptionally friendly male Lorquin's Admiral... He was avidly guarding and patrolling his territory in this little alcove of Willow trees, but didn't seem to mind me watching and filming him. On a whim I decided to try picking him up, which he allowed - especially after tasting the light layer of sweat on my finger. Butterflies are known for visiting unusual places to drink water and take in natural salts and minerals, which might be otherwise lacking in their diet. In this case, the salts came right to him and he seemed happy to enjoy the attention while he lapped it up! The Lorquin's Admiral Butterfly (Limenitis lorquini) was named after Pierre Lorquin, a French naturalist who came to California during the gold rush of the mid 1800's. It's a fairly common butterfly in canyon bottoms, wherever it's Willow caterpillar host plant grows abundantly. The larvae are not so easy to find and I found that it was easier to get a female to lay eggs than it was to locate caterpillars in the wilderness! Here, you can see the entire rearing project, from eggs to adult butterfly: lepidoptera.jcmdi.com Cameras used: Casio EX-F1 for slow motion, and Canon HF100 for 1080p HD The music is the title track from the "Digital Dreaming" CD by Technician (yours truly), mixed in with natural sounds from the Bouquet Canyon area.Full artist discography, MP3 downloads and CDs are available at the Technician website: technician.jcmdi.com ...

  • AR15 action closeup in slow motion 1000 fps Casio EX-FS10

Here is my LMT AR15 that I recorded with a Casio EX-FS10 point and shoot camera. The wide ones are 1000 frames per second played back at 30fps (except where noted at 25% playback). The last one that is 4:3 was recorded at 420fps. Not too shabby for a $115 camera. Btw, this was with the .204 Ruger barrel. These loads were 27.5grn Hodgdon H322 with Hornady V-max in a Winchester case with CCI 450 magnum primers.

  • Alligators w/ Deer Carcass at Brazos Bend State Park @ 210fps

Alligators aren't as ornery as crocodiles; and usually lead quite lives--regardless of how much people want them to be dangerous carnivores. I've been helping at Brazos Bend State Park over 9 years, and spent a lot of time near the alligators. I've been able to interpret what I've seen by finding current research papers and reference books, or even contacting some of the researchers. On October 10, 2010, I watched a pair of alligators chewing on the carcass of a large buck. Unlike most of the mass-copied emails we get about alligators and Brazos Bend State Park, this actually DID happen inside the park. The buck was probably wounded by a human (archery season had opened a week before), and found by the alligators. The carcass was old; bleached and bloodless. The large alligator was about 8 feet long--I verified this later when I identified the alligator on the trail by its bad eye and a scar under the other eye. Since it was lying on the trail I could easily estimate its size. Usually, alligators are possessive of their food. In this case, the large alligator allowed the smaller one to climb all over it and the carcass with hardly any challenge. The alligators were about 10 yards from me at the beginning. Later they were about 30 yards away during most of the later carcass handling. For those familiar with the park, I first found the alligators just West of the West end of the Spillway Bridge. The large one swam East close by the Spillway Bridge-followed by the small one ...

  • Airsoft A&K M249 vs Can Army (Part 1)

Well, I wanted to take airsoft guns vs cans to an extreme, this time being the number of cans being taken on. 24 Mountain Dew cans and one Sunkist can (he's the general in my mind.) I used an A&K M249 MKII running on a 10.8v battery and an M120 spring, firing .25g G&G BBs. I fired for almost 50 seconds in a single burst, I would highly advise against sustained firing like that for any sane person's gun. I would have actually kept firing, but the box magazine jammed from pumping all the BBs through. Oh well, there wasn't a can there that survived, the most intact one only suffered two separate hits. Also, the magazine did have trouble keeping up at times, so you can see the BBs stop flying for a few fractions of a second here and there. [I had to reupload it without Audioswapped music, and it took me a long time to find a song to replace the original one because I made the whole video with that song in mind. This is a great song though, and I only had to make minor alterations for it to fit well here.] Stay tuned for more and as always, thanks for watching!
